Re-Evaluating: 2021 NFL Draft’s Top 3 Picks

#1: Trevor Lawrence

Pre-Draft Grade: A+

Current Grade: C-

Who expected Trevor Lawrence to struggle THIS much two years into his career? Albeit Lawrence’s rookie year was peppered with constant turmoil and the infamous Urban Meyer controversy. And really what rookie QB wouldn’t struggle under those conditions. But fast forward to 2022 with the addition of Doug Pederson and increased offensive firepower and still Lawrence doesn’t show significant improvement. His stats have improved out of context, with 13-6 TD/Int, but his QBR is extremely low at a 51.2. I still believe Lawrence can be a good NFL QB, but the clock is ticking.

#2: Zach Wilson

Pre-Draft Grade: B

Current Grade: D-

I wasn’t sold on Zach Wilson going into the 2021 draft, and my suspicions have proven correct. The Jets have tried their best to get the most out of Wilson, using him both as a West Coast and Spread QB. Both approaches have failed. Wilson’s play is not only subpar, he often works against his own team. After putting up a measly 3 points against the Patriots, Wilson denied his role in the loss to the media. Robert Saleh has decided to bench Wilson in favor of veteran Mike White, leaving Wilson’s future with New York in doubt.

#3: Trey Lance

Pre-Draft Grade: B-

Current Grade: Incomplete

I don’t believe we can fairly judge Trey Lance’s career up to this point. Lance has dealt with his fair share of injuries, including a broken ankle that landed him on IR for the rest of the season. However, Lance has been above-average when starting with a positive TD-Int ratio and a decent QBR. It remains to be seen how Lance will come back from his injury and how he will perform.
