NFL Week 3: Overreactions, Analysis, and Superlatives

Are the Jags the best team in the AFC South?

OK, who thought in the preseason that the worst team for TWO straight seasons would blow out the predicted AFC South winner. Granted, the Chargers dealt with injuries to Keenan Allen (DNP) and Justin Herbert; however, getting pummeled 38-10 was inexcusable. While the Chargers had issues, the Jags’ improvements were more impressive. Trevor Lawrence performed like the prodigy we saw at Clemson and the Christian Kirk signing looks better every week. Travis Etienne still has room for growth in the run game, while James Robinson appears to have regained his rookie form. Furthermore, the Jags’ defense gets after the QB with edge rushers Josh Allen and emerging rookie Travon Walker. The secondary needs to work on efficiency, but, outside of that, I really like this Jags team.

Are the Patriots finished?

In my lifetime, the Patriots have dominated under Belichick’s helm, but for the first time in a long while they look vulnerable. The Pats lost 37-26 to MVP frontrunner Lamar Jackson and the Ravens. While the score may look close, the game was far from it. Jackson crushed the Pats’ run and pass defense with relative ease, and did it as the team’s leading rusher. A 1-2 record isn’t the reason why New England’s is bleak. It’s Mac Jones’ injury. Jones has a high ankle sprain likely keeping him sidelined for several weeks. During this time, the Pats face the Packers and the Bills, both playoff contenders. Heed caution in New England.

Derek Carr is not the guy in Vegas.

Thus far, the Raiders are easily one of the most disappointing teams of 2022. Davante Adams is 29th in the league in total receiving stats. Josh Jacobs has been serviceable, but only received 9 touches last week. Chandler Jones, another offseason addition has 5 tackles and zero sacks this season. However, the Raiders’ biggest problem is Derek Carr, who has played terrible for three weeks straight. Carr has a 48.8 QBR, which is below the league average. And he has turned over the ball more than he has scored: 4 interceptions and 3 fumbles to 6 TDs. I hope Vegas can turn things around, but 0-3 is a difficult hole to escape.
