Derek Carr
Best Fit: Carolina Panthers
At #9, Carolina isn’t in the best position to draft a QB. And, unfortunately, I don’t think Sam Darnold can be a reliable starter for 2023. Frank Reich’s new West Coast system will require a QB who can hang in the pocket and complete throws over the middle. Carr can do that. With a strong run game, DJ Moore, and a rising star in Terrance Marshall, Carr would find success in a weak NFC South.
Jimmy Garoppolo
Best Fit: Miami Dolphins
Miami is in weird spot with QBs. Tua has shown that he can be an elite QB, but his past severe concussions are problematic. Teddy Bridgewater can be a solid starter, but has limitations throwing the ball. Lastly, Skyler Thompson is just a decent backup at best. Jimmy G is a veteran who can step in when Tua cannot play or if he is unable to return to professional football.
Baker Mayfield
Best Fit: LA Rams
Matthew Stafford has said that he will be returning in 2023 despite retirement rumors. But can his body hold up? I do not believe so; Stafford is returning from elbow and back injuries, the kryptonite of NFL QBs. The Rams are entering a minor rebuild. And Mayfield played well at spots for the Rams. With Cooper Kupp back in the fold, I believe Baker can be a solid starter for 2023 or in 2024 if Stafford does move on.
Aaron Rodgers
Best Fit: The New York Jets
Multiple reports coming from Green Bay indicate Jordan Love will be the Packers starting QB in 2023 and beyond. Rodgers still has two years left on his contract; however, there will be teams willing to forfeit cap space for the former two-time MVP. Rodgers has some elite years left, and the Jets have the supporting cast to make him look like an MVP yet again. Garrett Wilson is only going to get better and Breece Hall will be stellar when he returns from injury. The real question is can the notoriously thin-skinned Rodgers handle the New York media circus?
