The Giants Issues Extend Beyond Daniel Jones
Monday was one of the worst performances that the MetLife Field crowd has ever witnessed, and ZACH WILSON has played there for the last two years. Being one of the few Daniel Jones apologists last season, I admit my error. Jones has just been terrible, but the Giants are hamstrung with his untradeable contract and low stock. If the G-Men were to draft a QB they would be unable to move Jones no matter the situation. But the issues lie beyond the QB position. Saquon Barkley is injured again and at odds with the front office. I can imagine him being moved at the trade deadline for some draft capital. Evan Neal has been disappointing at right tackle; meanwhile, Andrew Thomas has been great but injury-prone. 2023 looks bleak for the Giants, and the tunnel just keeps getting darker.
Josh Dobbs is 2023’s Geno Smith
2022 saw the resurgence of Geno Smith, who no one expected to be a top ten QB that season. Smith threw for 30 TDs while maintaining a 70% completion rating. In 2023, we may be witnessing a similar story a little south in Arizona. The Arizona Cardinals have surprisingly showed signs of life at times despite having a weak roster and a rookie head coach. Josh Dobbs has impressed in the stead of Kyler Murray, with four TDs and zero picks with TD on the ground as well. The Cards also have a rookie that continues to impress in Michael Wilson out of Stanford. If Dobbs can continue his solid play he could very well earn a contract with a QB needy team. Or if Arizona decides to keep him around as an insurance policy, Dobbs will earn a nice salary in 2024.
The Commanders Have Something In Howell
I had a first-round grade on Howell coming out of UNC last season, while he’s had his ups and downs (Buffalo), he’s shown he can contend at the NFL QB level. The Eagles are a juggernaut of a defense but Howell made them look human. The numbers aren’t astronomical but 29-41 for 290 and a TD is a very solid stat-line. Howell also commandeered the game-tying drive with a dart to Jahan Dotson in the endzone. Washington is sitting at 2-2 and is third in the NFC East. Howell has been efficient thus far and reminds me of 2020 Baker Mayfield, a consistent passer who makes plays when needed.
Hail to the Bills
The Bills are now the best team in the AFC, in my humble opinion. The Chiefs haven’t looked like they are near their full potential yet, while the Ravens have some questions at running back and receiver. The Bills do not have these weaknesses and absolutely eviscerated the Dolphins, a team who dropped 70 points on the Broncos last week. Josh Allen was 21/25 with 320 yards and 4 TDs, three of which went to Stefon Diggs. The Bills defense also held Tua to one TD while sacking him four times and picking him off once. It’s early in the season, but the AFC could very well run through Buffalo.
