1: Serge Ibaka, C, Clippers
Ibaka is the definition of a NBA role player in today’s system. While, Ibaka is primarily a rebounding and blocking center, he is also an effective lockdown defender. He has shut down Mavs center Kristaps Porzingis in 4 games, but will have to continue this level of play for the Clips to come back against the Mavs.
2: Norman Powell, SG, Blazers
Powell is one of the best 3 and D players in today’s NBA. A 3 and D player is a player who specializes shooting three and defense. Powell never grew into his role in Toronto and was overshadowed by Kawhi Leonard and later Pascal Siakam. But his talent was on full display against the Nuggets, as he dropped 29 on one of the best defensive teams in the West. If Powell keeps this level of play up, the Blazers can go far.
3: DeAndre Ayton, C, Suns
Ayton may be the most underrated center in the NBA. He averaged a double-double in his rookie season, but his second year disappointed due to a PED suspension. Ayton boasts the second highest three-point percentage of any center (Embiid) and is the Suns’s second best scorer (Booker). Meanwhile, Ayton averages .92 blocks a game and averages .89 steals per game. Those stats demonstrate his defensive efficiency. His offensive prowess is good as well, averaging 21.2 points and 8.9 rebounds a game.
4: Jrue Holiday, G, Bucks
Holiday is a great defender, but his offensive production has dropped off. However, Holiday is now playing a completely different role in Milwaukee than his New Orleans’s days. In New Orleans, he played a playmaking role, but with the Bucks he plays an off-ball slasher and defensive specialist guard. Holiday leads the NBA in steals and tipped balls.
5: Jordan Clarkson, G, Jazz
Clarkson, fresh off a Sixth Man of The Year recognition, has been lights-out from the three line for the Jazz. Clarkson shoots three’s better than Donovan Mitchell, but his defense is sub-par. The Jazz are one of the best shooting teams in the West, but Clarkson will need to stand out.
